We’re a strange bunch, the British. In most countries around the world, television plays virtually no part in Christmas tradition. While TV stations in most other countries fill their Yuletide schedules with repeats, old movies and very little else, the Christmas special is something we’ve all grown up with over here, from Morecambe and Wise to The Office. We seem to plan our entire Christmas Day around the big programmes which get many millions of viewers, often some of the biggest audiences of the year. Every December up and down the country we would buy the bumper two-week Radio Times and start highlighting programmes in a complicated colour coded system… oh, was that just me?
